Hey everyone, some important market news today, please read - especially if you're a vendor.
I'd like to preface this update by thanking you all so much for your support as we've started our soft launch! We've done over $1000 in sales with absolutely no marketing this week. Almost all of the market's core features are functioning as intended and seeing everyone come together has been super fun and impressive to watch. While the soft launch has been running smoothly for the most part we did uncover a serious issue this week. While accounting and payouts are not affected this WILL affect shipping and how orders are processed over the next week.
The Market utilized custom software from a previous developer which allowed us to set the shipping method for each individual product rather than one setting for a vendors entire storefront. Those of you who have used the market, created products or have fulfilled orders are aware how important this is to our core functionality. This custom software was fatally bugged and caused a myriad of issues including but not limited to; incorrect sub totals in the cart view, incorrect totals in checkout and incorrect values being charged to the customers affecting both our Stripe and Paypal integrations. The error was so severe and had such a wide reaching effect on our vendors and orders that we were forced to completely remove it from our code, effective immediately.
ALL shipping methods still function correction with the exception of FLAT RATE SHIPPING. If you utilize flat rate shipping PLEASE [disable those products] OR [build shipping into the cost of your item and offer shipping for free] until the new code has been introduced to the marketplace.
Since we're building this new shipping suite from scratch we've been able to design it with your feedback in mind and think the replacement software will be a massive value add and safe vendors time and money by offering them new tools and new ways to customize the checkout experience for their customers. We've developed a thorough and complete plan to execute this new code addition and I'm excited to share the details with all of you. The impact of this code will be so substantial that we're labeling it's additon and subsequent upgrade v1.1 - The Shipping Update. If you're wondering how it will work here are some details.
I was going to hold off on this ticket until things were stable but the cart error is forcing my hand. As such this ticket will be the absolute only priority until completed, as the testers shopping experience will be directly affected. The goal of this addon code is to provide enhanced options for shipping on a per-product basis when the general shipping methods do not apply or can not be used.
1. The default Market functionality for shipping is used for all orders. Products are assigned a weight, rate calculation takes this weight, generates pricing based on the shipping methods the vendor has activated in their vendor settings and offers a combined single box total for all products being purchased from the vendor. Inside individual products vendors will see this option selected by default and will be named "Weight Based Shipping"
2. Vendors have the ability to choose "Flat Rate - Single Item" per product listing, which overrides the general functionality of the shipping system ONLY for that one specific item. Other items from the same vendor are still calculated using the standard method.
3. Vendors have the ability to choose "Flat Rate For Cart" per product listing. If an item with this option is purchased, all items from this vendor are included in the flat rate shipping cost of the item added, along with the item that provides it. If this item is removed, other items from the same vendor are calculated using the standard method. If two items with "Flat Rate For Cart" are added to the cart together, the flat rate shipping method with the highest cost is used.
4. Vendors have the ability to choose "Free Shipping - Single Item" per product listing, which overrides the general functionality of the shipping system ONLY for that one specific item. Other items from the same vendor are still calculated using the standard method.
5. Vendors have the ability to choose "Free Shipping For Cart" per product listing. If an item with this option is purchased, all items from this vendor are included in the free shipping along with the item that provides it. If this item is removed, other items from the same vendor are calculated using the standard method.
- Vendors see an option titled "Weight Based Shipping" which is selected by default on all products.
- Only ONE of the above options can be selected at a time per product.
- If Free Shipping For Cart and Flat Rate For Cart items are both purchased, Free Shipping For Cart takes priority.
- Flat Rate - Single Item and Free Shipping - Single Item should be able to exist in the cart with each other and standard shipping items without error.
- Free Shipping For Cart and Flat Rate For Cart should only affect shipping from THAT vendor. If the user checks out with multiple vendors at once they should still be charged according to the settings of other vendors for those respective orders.
This bug sucks but it's nothing that can't be worked around. We considered closing the marketplace until it's resolved but I have faith that active sellers are communicating consistently enough that work-arounds can be established with you on a per-vendor basis, as needed. Most of our current active sellers heavily utilize free shipping or weight based methods and so we've decided to remain open and continue testing during this development period.
